Bobsleigh[edit]

A professional bobsleigher since 2002, Voyevoda won silver in the four-man bobsleigh event with teammates Philippe EgorovAlexei Seliverstov, and Alexandre Zoubkov at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. He also won a bronze in the two-man event at the 2008 FIBT World Championships in Altenberg, Germany. At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Voyevoda won a bronze in the two-man event. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Voyevoda initially won a gold medal in the two-man event and a gold medal in the four-man event. Voyevoda received the Order For Merit to the Fatherland Award 4th class with Russian President Vladimir Putin handing the state awards.[1]

On 24 November 2017, he was stripped of the 2014 Olympic medals by the International Olympic Committee, following the doping violation of his bobsledding partner Aleksandr Zubkov. On 18 December 2017, Voyevoda received a personal lifetime ban from the Olympic Games due to doping violations at the 2014 Winter Olympics.[2] [3]

On 1 February 2018, the CAS removed the sanctions from Alexey Negodaylo and Dmitry Trunenkov in bobsleigh, but upheld them on their teammates Alexandr Zubkov and Alexey Voyevoda.[4]

Arm wrestling[edit]

Voyevoda holds a good deal of recognition as a professional arm wrestler, having also secured several Russian arm wrestling championships. His triumph over legendary arm-wrestler John Brzenk was immortalized in the feature-length documentary, "Pulling John", directed by Vassiliki Khonsari and Sevan Matossian. The film "Pulling John" also chronicles his life and training in Russia. He was defeated by Travis Bagent at the 2003 WAF championship, but won the Zloty Tur 2004 cup one year later, defeating high level arm wrestlers such as Bagent, Brzenk, Matt Girdner, and Alexey Semerenko. Voyevoda reclaimed the WAF championship in 2004 (left- and right-handed) and won the European Championship the same year. After a left-hand vendetta match with Alexey Semerenko (winning 4–2) and Travis Bagent (losing 5–1) in 2005, Voyevoda took a break from his professional arm wrestling career to return to bobsleigh training until 2007. As of 2007, Alexey Voyevoda returned to the arm wrestling scene once again, winning a vendetta match 6–0 against Michael Todd in Bulgaria on 26 May. After that brief comeback, he resigned from the arm wrestling scene due to his bobsleigh and Olympic judo training until February 2016. In February 2016, Voyevoda decided to return to arm wrestling and faced Tim Bresnan, but failed to produce the skills and power he once had, ultimately losing the fight 5–1.

On June 24, 2023, Voyevoda signed a contract to face John Brzenk at King of the Table 8 on September 23, 2023.[5][6] He lost the match 4-2 and stated that he doubted he would take another match.

Following the September 2016 elections in Russia, Voyevoda became a state deputy from Krasnodar Krai, representing the ruling party, United Russia.

Personal life[edit]

jeff dabe

Jeff Dabe (born 1962 or 1963) is an American heavy machine operator and professional arm wrestler, noted for his oversized limbs. Dabe was the 2021 International Federation of Arm Wrestling's world champion.

Biography[edit]

Dabe was born 1962 or 1963[1] and lives in Stacy, Minnesota.[1] He works as a heavy equipment operator and runs a hobby farm.[2][3] Jeff and his wife Gina have three children.[4]

Dabe is noted for his oversized limbs. In 2022, his forearm had a circumference of 20 inches and his ring finger had a circumference of 5 inches. His limb size is not a consequence of gigantism or elephantitis.[5]

Dabe has been arm wrestling since 1981,[2] and was given the nickname Popeye early in his arm wrestling endeavours.[5] In 1996, Dabe injured his right elbow in an arm wrestling match and stopped competing.[1] In 2012,[1] at the age of 48,[5] he returned to the sport, wrestling only with his left arm[5] and becoming the Minnesota state arm wrestling champion.[5]

He is the 2021 International Federation of Arm Wrestling's world champion.[5]

john brzenk

John Brzenk (born July 15, 1964) is a professional armwrestler from the United States, who is widely acknowledged as 'the greatest armwrestler of all time'.[1][2] During his undefeated streak of 22 years and career as a professional armwrestler, Brzenk has won more than 500 championship titles.[3]

Biography & Accomplishments[edit]

John Brzenk's father, John Brzenk Sr., was an arm wrestler, and Brzenk says he gained some of his forearm size through genetics.[4] John started his amateur career in the classroom, where he arm wrestled students across tables for five years. When he was in eighth grade, he broke his arm while armwrestling his father's friend, and has stated that this breakage increased his tendon strength significantly.[5] Over the years, Brzenk has often been called "The Giant Crusher", "Superman", or the "Perfect Storm" for his ability to pin opponents twice his size.[6]

Brzenk started his professional career in 1982, at the age of 18, where he won his first world title on ABC's 1983 Wide World of Sports. From 1982 to 2015, John only lost a single supermatch, and only a handful of people had beaten him in tournaments. Most of these losses occurred later during that time when he was of advanced age. Two of his most prominent losses were to Alexey Voyevoda in 2004 (John's first professional loss after 22 years) and Devon Larratt in 2008, both of whom are considered legendary arm wrestlers. [7] Aside from arm wrestling, John works as a mechanic at Delta Air Lines.[8] He says the job is non-physical so his arms get plenty of rest. During his career he has competed for upwards of $80,000 USD.[9][10]

Brzenk won championships in a number of different weight classes, including four world championships in the heavyweight division, and the middleweight world championship.[11] He also had an uncredited cameo in the 1987 Sylvester Stallone film Over the Top, and was the subject of the feature documentary "Pulling John", directed by Vassiliki Khonsari and Sevan Matossian. The documentary chronicles Brzenk's legendary arm wrestling career by following him intimately for 4 years, in which John competes in global tournaments and ponders retiring from the sport he loves.[12][13] After defeating Marcio Barboza in the 2015 WAL Heavyweight Right-Handed Championship, Brzenk would take an extended period of time off from armwrestling due to injuries.[14]

Arm Wrestling Comeback[edit]

In 2018, John Brzenk would lose an attempted comeback match against Travis Bagent in Moldova.[15] On July 31, 2021, Brzenk would return to arm wrestling full time by defeating Chance Shaw in a supermatch.[16] On December 11 of the same year, John Brzenk would face right-handed heavyweight title holder Devon Larratt at King Of The Table 2 (KOTT 2). Despite John defeating Larratt in one of his most recent matches before his layoff from armwrestling, a bigger, stronger Larratt would prove to be too much for John as he would go on to lose by a score of 4-0.[17]

On February 10, 2022, Brzenk would make his debut at the international arm wrestling tournament East vs West (East vs West 2 event) by defeating Khadzimurat Zoloev. This win allowed John to once again, at the age of 57, reclaim the world’s top ranking in the 225 pound division.[18] On May 21, at East vs West 3, Brzenk would have a match against Zurab Tavberidze. John would go on to win this match by a score of 3-2.[19]

On August 6, 2022, at East vs West 4, John Brzenk was defeated in a right-handed supermatch with Kazakhstan armwrestler Kydyrgali Ongarbaev.[20] On November 19th of the same year, in the next installment of East vs West, Brzenk would defeat Oleg Petrenko in a right-handed supermatch in dominant fashion, 3-0.[21]

On January 21, 2023, John Brzenk would participate in a fifth consecutive installment of East vs West, losing a hard fought supermatch to Irakli Zirakashvili by a score of 3-2.[22] The next month, on February 25, Brzenk would have his toughest test to date, a match at KOTT 6 against Super Heavyweight Denis Cyplenkov, the former world #1 who had not had a match in 4 years due to health issues. Despite the long layoff, Cyplenkov did not look like he had lost any of his physical or table ability, defeating Brzenk by an almost effortless 6-0 score.[23] On August 12, 2023, Brzenk would lose 3-0 to Todd Hutchings at the AWC Reloaded event.[24]

On September 23, 2023, John Brzenk would go against Alexey Voyevoda at King Of The Table 8. This was a rematch of their historic first match in 2004 which Voyevoda won. Circumstances were different this time as Voyevoda had not competed in years and was not as dominant as he was back then. John would win the match 4-2.[25]
